The Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project

The Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project

Made possible by

The Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project is a collaboration between the UMCG, Lifelines, Philips and Regional SMEs (about 20 companies united in LifeCooperative). The Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project is co-financed by the European Union, the European Regional Development Fund, the Northern Netherlands Partnership (SNN), the Province of Groningen, the Province of Friesland and the Municipality of Groningen.

What is the Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project?

In this supplemental study, we ask Lifelines NEXT participants to test the Philips Avent 396/11 breast pump and to periodically complete questionnaires about the use of the pump and their experience with it. With this study, we want to investigate whether mothers want to or can breastfeed longer with the Philips Avent breast pump as compared to other brands of breast pumps or without the use of a pump. For example, researchers will look at ease of use, comfort, the amount of bottled breastmilk and how quickly breastfeeding gets established.

The goal of the Lifelines NEXT – Breast Pump Project

Philips will use the results of this research to further improve breast pump products. This will make it easier for future mothers to breastfeed their child for a longer period of time. Furthermore, we will investigate the relationship between the use of the breast pump, the duration of breastfeeding and the quality of life in young families. By participating, participants contribute to (research for) a healthier future!

If there were, we were obliged to report this to the Medical Ethics Committee (which must approve these types of studies) and to participants of the project. It is true that we ask the participants to answer questions about the breast pump. This requires some effort from the participant and can potentially be experienced as a disadvantage.

We ask you to start using the breast pump as soon as you start pumping milk.

It is entirely up to you how long you want to breastfeed and therefore how long you use the breast pump.

No, unfortunately. Within the breast pump project, we only have a small number of pumps to test and need to do so with as many different women as possible.
