Follow-up of gut microbiome - metagenomic study in 10K DAG3 participants

Previously we have analyzed the microbiome data in LifeLines-DEEP (LLD), GoNL and DAG3 participants, and performed extensive analysis on the relationship of gut microbiome composition with environment, lifestyle, intrinsic, genetics and multi-omics factors. More than 20 papers are published using the LLD and GoNL cohorts (collected in 2012-2013), and the major paper describing the gut microbiome DAG3 cohort is in preparation.
Longitudinal collection of phenotypes by Lifelines gives a unique opportunity to study the long-term dynamics of the gut microbiome and its relation to developing and progressing of diseases and phenotypes. We are currently analyzing the longitudinal data for 350 LLD participants that were also part of the DAG3 collection , and observe that microbiome shows individual specific patterns that could be stable for >3 years. However, we also observed that some microbial changes were also related to individual’s changes over time were in line with individual’s changes in their healthy status, lifestyle and medication usage.
