Mandatory additional references

This page provides an overview of the mandatory references in case you used additional data collections (initiated by external researchers), secondary data (generated by external researchers), and/or linked data obtained from external data sources.

Mandatory additional references

Additional data that has been collected on top of our own general assessments are becoming more and more available for researchers. This additional data could refer to 1) results from an additional questionnaire or assessment, 2) linked data from another data source, or 3) secondary variables generated by researchers. These additional datasets are often developed with the extensive effort, (financial) support, and specific expertise from external research groups and therefore require additional references when they are used in your publication. Publication of linked data may need to follow additional source specific publication guidelines. (All references on this page are cited using MLA referencing)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

There is no need to include references for the data that you didn't use. Only data that has been used in a manuscript has to be cited there.

Generally speaking the different requirements stem from the requests from researchers who provide the data to Lifelines. Of course we will evaluate whether this request is reasonable. In most cases the inclusion of a reference in which the provided data is described is enough. Co-authorships are reserved for large, labor-intensive/expensive additional datasets.

We are always happy to receive new secondary data! When you have data you would like to provide to other researchers, please contact us at data@lifelines.nl and we will discuss the details.
